Privacy Notice

What Summit collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how to limit that sharing.

Who this notice covers and what we collect

This notice applies to every member of Summit Credit Union, to each joint owner on a member account, and to anyone who applies for an account or a loan whether or not the application is approved. It also applies to people who use this website, our mobile app, and our ATMs, and to former members, because federal record retention rules require us to keep certain records after an account closes.

We collect information in three ways. First, from you: name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, government identification, employment and income, and the account balances you list on an application. Setting up digital banking adds an email address, a phone number, and details about the device you sign in from.

Second, from your activity with us. Each transaction creates a record of the amount, date, merchant, and channel, and card purchases also record a general location. Deposits, loan payments, transfers, check images, and ATM sessions all generate records we are required to retain.

Third, from other companies. Credit bureaus supply your report and score when you apply for credit or when we review an existing line. Identity verification services confirm that an applicant is who they claim to be. Payment networks report chargebacks, fraud flags, and card status changes. We do not purchase consumer profiles from data brokers for marketing.

We collect this information because a financial institution cannot operate without it. Federal law requires us to verify the identity of every member, monitor for money laundering, report certain transactions, and keep records of what we do with your money. A lending decision requires income and credit information, and fraud monitoring can only flag an unusual transaction if it knows what your usual transactions look like. Beyond those requirements, we use what we hold to post transactions, produce statements, answer questions when you call 800.555.7846, price a loan, and tell you about a product that would lower your cost.

Summit does not sell member information

We have never sold member data to a third party and we do not rent, trade, or license it. As a member-owned cooperative chartered in 1948, the credit union has no shareholders to whom member data could be monetized. The sharing described below is limited to what is needed to run your accounts, to meet legal obligations, and to marketing you can turn off.

Your right to limit sharing

You may tell us to stop using your information for our own marketing, to stop sharing it with our affiliates for their marketing, and to stop joint marketing with other financial companies. An opt-out does not close any account, change any rate or term, or affect the service you receive at a branch or on the phone. It does not stop the everyday business sharing in the first row of the table above, because that sharing is what allows deposits to post, cards to authorize, and loan history to be reported accurately.

There are three ways to opt out. Change your marketing preferences after signing in through member login. Call 800.555.7846 and tell member service you want to opt out of marketing sharing. Or write to the Privacy Officer, Summit Credit Union, and include your name, mailing address, and the last four digits of your member number.

We process your choice within 30 days of receiving it, and it stays in effect until you change it. Joint owners each make their own election; one owner's opt-out is not applied automatically to the other. If you later want product notices again, the same three channels turn them back on.

Certain communications are not marketing and continue regardless of your election. These include periodic statements, transaction and fraud alerts, rate change notices, error resolution notices, escrow analyses, payment reminders, this annual privacy notice, and any other communication we are required by law to send. We keep those categories separate from marketing deliberately.

How we protect information

Member information is encrypted in transit and at rest. Internal access is limited by role, so a teller sees what a teller needs and a mortgage underwriter sees what an underwriter needs. Access to member records is logged and those logs are reviewed. Staff complete security and privacy training at hire and annually thereafter, and access rights are revoked the day employment ends. Service providers, including our core processor, card network, statement printer, and check imaging vendor, operate under written contracts that limit their use of the data and require them to protect it to our standard.

On your side of the connection, digital banking supports two-step verification, device recognition, and alerts you can set by amount, merchant, or transaction type. Our fraud monitoring may text you about an unusual card transaction, but it asks only for a yes or a no. It will never ask for a password, a full card number, or a one-time passcode. Guidance on recognizing impersonation attempts is kept current in the security center, and a lost or stolen card should be reported through report lost or stolen.

This website uses cookies to maintain a signed-in session, remember a branch preference, and measure which pages members use. You may block cookies in your browser; digital banking will continue to function but will ask you to verify your device more often. The mobile app requests location access only to show nearby locations from the branch and ATM locator and to help fraud monitoring judge whether a card transaction fits your pattern. Both permissions may be denied without losing account access. When you follow a link to an outside site, this notice no longer applies and that site's practices govern.

Access, corrections, and how to reach us

You may request a copy of the information we hold about you, together with an explanation of where it came from. If a record is inaccurate, tell us and we will correct it and notify the credit bureaus or service providers that received the incorrect version. Requests are handled by the Privacy Officer at Summit Credit Union; reach that desk by calling 800.555.7846 or through contact us. If your question concerns a suspected fraudulent transaction, report the card first and address the privacy question afterward.

We review this notice annually and deliver a copy to every member each year, as federal law requires. When a material change is made, we notify you before it takes effect rather than afterward. Related terms appear in the disclosures index and the fee schedule. Summit Credit Union is federally insured by NCUA, with member deposits insured to at least $250,000. Equal Housing Opportunity Lender. NMLS #412622. Routing number 271982561.
