One fixed payment, one payoff date, no surprises
We price loans for the people who own us not for a quarterly earnings call
Summit has been member-owned since 1948, and today 412,000 members hold the equity in $14.2 billion of assets. There are no outside shareholders waiting for a cut of your interest. What margin we do earn funds branches, staff and the rates on the other side of the balance sheet.
How much to borrow, and for how long
The amount is usually easy: it is the invoice, the payoff quote, or the estimate in front of you. The term is the part people get wrong. A longer term looks kinder on a monthly budget and costs noticeably more over the life of the loan, because interest keeps accruing on a balance that comes down slowly. Our advice to members is to pick the shortest term whose payment still leaves room for groceries and an emergency, then use the payment calculator to sanity-check the number against a real month.
Personal loans at Summit run from $2,500 to $50,000 on terms of 12 to 60 months. Interest accrues daily on the outstanding balance, so paying more than the scheduled amount shortens the loan immediately. There is no penalty for doing it, and no need to call us first.
If the purchase is a vehicle or a home improvement and you own equity, a secured product will almost always be cheaper. Compare this page against new auto loans and the home equity line of credit before you commit. A lender at any of our 42 branches will walk through the comparison with you and will tell you plainly when the personal loan is the wrong tool.
How the underwriting decision gets made
There is no single cutoff score, and no algorithm we hide behind.

Before you apply
Do I have to be a member first?
You can start the application before joining, but the loan cannot fund until membership is open. That takes a $5 share deposit and a few minutes of identification, and it can happen in the same appointment as the loan closing.
What documents should I have ready?
A government photo ID, your two most recent pay stubs, and payoff statements for any debt you plan to pay off with the proceeds. Self-employed members should bring two years of tax returns instead of stubs.
Can Summit pay my other creditors directly?
Yes, and most members choose that. You give us the account numbers and payoff amounts and we send the funds straight to those lenders. It removes the temptation to spend the money and it closes the balances faster.
Is there a minimum amount?
The floor is $2,500. Below that, a share-secured loan or a small line of credit is usually a better fit, and a lender at any branch can set one up. Call 800.555.7846 if you are not sure which applies.
Will a personal loan help or hurt my credit score?
The hard inquiry and the new account cost a few points at first. If the loan replaces high-balance revolving debt, the drop in utilisation usually outweighs that within a couple of months, and on-time payments build history from there.
What if my situation changes mid-term?
Call us before a payment is missed rather than after. We have due-date changes, short extensions and hardship options, and all of them are easier to arrange while the loan is still current.
Find out where you stand
Checking your rate takes two minutes and uses a soft inquiry. If the number does not work, you have lost nothing.
