Check Your Rate

A soft-pull prequalification that shows the rate, amount and terms you qualify for. Your credit score is untouched.

Soft inquiry, hard inquiry, and why the difference matters

There are two ways a lender can look at your credit file. A soft inquiry lets us read the file to see what you would qualify for. It is visible only to you, it does not move your score, and no other lender pulling your report will ever see it. A hard inquiry is recorded when you formally apply for credit; it is visible to everyone and typically costs a few points for around twelve months.

Prequalifying with Summit is a soft inquiry. You can check today, check again in three weeks, and compare us against two other lenders the same afternoon without any of it touching your score. We tell you clearly on screen at the point where a full application would trigger a hard inquiry, and that never happens without you choosing it.

One more thing worth knowing when you do reach the application stage: hard inquiries for auto and mortgage shopping that fall inside a 45-day window are treated as a single inquiry by the scoring models. Shopping several lenders in the same fortnight does not stack up damage. Rates for every product sit on today's rates if you would rather look before you give us anything at all.

Before you start

What you will need, and what we will not ask for

Everything on this list is something you already know without looking it up.

Your identifying details Legal name, date of birth and Social Security number. We need these to locate the right credit file; a mismatch is the most common reason a prequalification stalls.
Address and time there Your current address and roughly how long you have lived at it. If it is under two years, have the previous address handy as well.
Gross annual income The figure before taxes and deductions, including regular overtime, commission or a second job. Estimate honestly rather than optimistically; it gets verified later either way.
What you want to borrow An approximate amount and the purpose. A rough figure is fine at this stage and can be changed when you move to a full application.
No documents at this stage Nothing to scan, upload or bring in. Pay stubs, tax returns and purchase contracts only come into it once you accept a quote and open a real application.
No membership required You can prequalify without any relationship with Summit. If you decide to go ahead, a $5 share deposit opens membership and makes you a part owner of the credit union.

A quote is information, not an obligation and we do not chase people

You receive one email with the figures attached. If you asked to be contacted, a lending specialist calls once. There is no dialler working through a list of people who merely looked, and 412,000 members would notice if there were.

Common questions

What happens after the quote

Is the quoted rate guaranteed?

It holds for 30 days provided the information you gave us checks out at full application. On mortgages the rate is not locked until you have an accepted purchase contract and specifically ask us to lock it.

What does Summit ask for if I accept?

For most consumer loans, two recent pay stubs and a photo ID. Mortgages need considerably more, and your loan officer sends a single consolidated list rather than trickling requests out across a week.

Can I prequalify with a co-borrower?

Yes. Both credit files are read with soft inquiries and both incomes count, which often moves the offer down a pricing tier. Each of you is equally responsible for the loan if you go ahead.

Why is my final rate sometimes different?

A prequalification uses what you told us plus a soft read of your credit. If verified income comes in lower, the loan amount changes, or new debt appears before closing, the tier can move. Most quotes hold exactly as issued.

What if I do not qualify today?

You receive a written statement of the specific reasons, which is your right under federal law. A Summit lender will then go through what would change the answer — often a few months of history, a lower balance, or a credit builder loan.

How is my information protected?

It is transmitted encrypted and used only to produce your quote. We do not sell member data. Our privacy notice sets out exactly what is collected and how long it is kept.
