Most forms need two numbers: 271982561 and yours
Which number a form is actually asking for
Four different numbers get confused with each other. Here is what each one does.
When to use each one
Both move money between institutions, and they are not interchangeable.
Wire fees current as of July 2026 and subject to change; see the fee schedule for the full list. This is a demonstration website; rates, products, and figures shown are illustrative only.
A wire is final. Verify before you send
Wire fraud around real estate closings is the most expensive scam we see, and the pattern is always the same: an email that looks like it came from the title company, with new instructions and a reason to hurry. Call the closing office at a number you looked up yourself, never one printed in the email, and read the account number back digit by digit. If anything about the request feels rushed, stop and call us at 800.555.7846 first.
Three places your account number lives
The most reliable source is digital banking: open the account, tap account details, then show number. It gives the exact number in the format other institutions expect, with no leading zeros to guess at. The second place is the bottom of a check, reading left to right: routing number first, then your account number, then the check number. Do not use the number at the top right corner of the check, which is only the check number. Third, every monthly statement lists it in the header, and any teller at our 42 branches can confirm it once they verify who you are.
A routing number is public information and appears on every check you write, so sharing it alone carries no risk. Your account number is different. Give it out only when you initiated the request, such as a payroll form from your employer, a tax return, or linking an outside account you own. No one from Summit will ever call and ask you to read your account number back to them; we already have it. If you get that call, hang up and read our security center or reach us through contact us.
Routing and account number questions
Is the routing number different for savings and checking?
No. Summit uses one routing number, 271982561, for every account and every product. Only the account number changes between your checking, savings and loans.
Do wires use a different routing number?
Not at Summit. Some institutions publish a separate wire routing number; ours is the same 271982561 for ACH, direct deposit and domestic wires. The sender just needs our address and your name in the beneficiary field as well.
My employer's form rejected my number. What went wrong?
Usually the member number was entered instead of the account number, or a leading zero was dropped. Pull the exact string from account details in digital banking and re-enter it rather than typing it from memory.
How long does a new direct deposit take to start?
Most employers need one full pay cycle, sometimes two. Watch for the first deposit and keep the old account open until you see it land, because a rejected deposit gets returned to the payroll processor and can take another cycle to fix.
Is it safe to give out my routing number?
Yes. It is printed on every check and published on this page. Treat the account number with more care, and share it only in response to a request you started yourself.
Can I send a wire outside of branch hours?
Wire requests must be verified with a person, so they are handled during business hours. Requests received after 3 p.m. Central go out the next business day. For anything less urgent, a free ACH transfer usually arrives just as well.
Not sure you have the right number?
Two minutes on the phone beats a payment that bounces back three days later.
