Five topics cover roughly nine in ten calls
Accounts and deposits
Does Summit checking carry a monthly fee?
No. Free Checking has no monthly service charge, no minimum balance, and no requirement to keep a direct deposit running. As a member-owned cooperative we would be charging ourselves.
When does a check deposit become available?
Cash, wires, and direct deposits post the same business day. Checks generally release the first $275 next business day, with the remainder on the second business day. Deposits over $5,525 or into accounts under 30 days old can hold longer, and the teller or app tells you the exact release date at the time of deposit.
Can I get my paycheck two days early?
Yes, automatically on every checking account. We credit payroll and federal benefit files the moment the originator submits them, which is usually one to two days before the stated pay date. There is nothing to enroll in.
What is the difference between money market and high-yield savings?
A high-yield savings account pays one flat rate on any balance and is built for an emergency fund. A money market pays in tiers that reward larger balances and comes with limited check-writing. Members holding more than about $25,000 usually do better in the money market.
Can I close a share certificate early?
Yes, with an early withdrawal penalty. Terms of 12 months or less forfeit 90 days of dividends; longer terms forfeit 180 days. The penalty can reach into principal if the certificate is very new, so call 800.555.7846 for the exact figure before you decide. See share certificates for current terms.
How much of my money is insured?
Deposits are federally insured by the NCUA to at least $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category. Adding a joint owner or a payable-on-death beneficiary expands coverage well past that. A branch officer can map your accounts against the categories in about fifteen minutes.
Cards and payments
My card was declined and I have money. Why?
The most common cause is our fraud model flagging an unfamiliar merchant, country, or a sudden run of small test charges. Approve the text alert we send and retry, or freeze and unfreeze the card in the app. If neither works, call 800.555.7846.
What do I do about a charge I did not make?
Freeze the card in the app first, then file a dispute. Under Regulation E your liability is $0 if you report an unauthorized debit card transaction within two business days of learning about it. Start at report lost or stolen.
Are ATM withdrawals free?
At any of our 42 branch ATMs and the 85,000 surcharge-free machines in our shared network, yes. Outside that network the machine's owner may charge you, and we rebate up to $15 per month on qualifying checking accounts. Find machines through the locator.
Which routing number do I use?
271982561 for direct deposit, ACH, and wires alike. Your account number is not the number printed on your card; it appears on statements and in online banking. Full instructions are on the routing numbers page.
Can I use my card overseas?
Yes. Set a travel notice in the app so purchases abroad are not flagged, and expect a 1% international transaction fee on the converted amount. Chip and PIN is widely accepted; a few unattended kiosks in Europe still require a PIN, so make sure yours is set before you fly.
How do I stop a recurring payment?
Contact the merchant first, then place a stop through us at least three business days before the next scheduled date. For debit card subscriptions, cancelling the card number is often faster than a stop order. Note that a stop does not cancel your underlying obligation to the merchant.
Digital banking
How do I reset my password?
Use the reset link on the sign-in screen and confirm through your two-factor method. If you have also lost that device, call 800.555.7846 and we verify you another way. Nobody at Summit can see your password or reset it from a chat.
Is there a mobile deposit limit?
$5,000 per day and $15,000 per rolling 30 days once an account is 90 days old; newer accounts start lower and step up automatically. Endorse the back and write "for mobile deposit at Summit CU," then keep the paper check for 14 days before shredding it.
Why does the app sign me out so quickly?
Sessions expire after ten minutes of inactivity, and immediately if the device is locked. It is deliberate. Turning on face or fingerprint sign-in makes getting back in take about a second, which is why most members leave the timeout alone.
Does bill pay cost anything?
No, including the paper checks we mail on your behalf. Schedule electronic payees five business days ahead and mailed checks seven. Set the date to when the biller must receive it, not your due date, since posting is not instant.
Can I send money to another person?
Yes, through person-to-person transfers using a phone number or email address, or by external transfer to an account you own elsewhere. Person-to-person payments behave like cash and are effectively irreversible, so only send to people you actually know.
Where do I download statements?
Sign in at member login, open Documents, and choose a statement period. We keep 84 months of PDFs online at no charge. Paper copies older than that can be pulled from archive for a research fee listed in the fee schedule.
Loans and credit
Can I see a rate without hurting my credit?
Yes. Check your rate uses a soft pull that never shows on the version of your report lenders score. A hard inquiry happens only when you accept an offer and submit a full application.
How long does a preapproval hold?
Auto preapprovals hold the quoted rate for 30 days, giving you time to shop dealers with a real number in hand. Mortgage preapprovals are valid for 90 days, though we re-verify income and employment before closing.
Does rate shopping count as several inquiries?
No. Scoring models treat all auto or mortgage inquiries inside a 14-day window as a single event, precisely so shopping is not punished. Applying for four car loans in one week costs you no more than applying for one.
HELOC or personal loan?
A home equity line is cheaper but takes several weeks and secures the debt against your house. A personal loan funds in days with nothing pledged. Under roughly $15,000, most members choose the personal loan and keep the equity untouched.
How fast does a mortgage close?
Most Summit purchase mortgages close 30 to 38 days after a complete application. The appraisal queue and how quickly you return documents drive the timeline far more than underwriting does. Sellers asking for a 21-day close should hear from your loan officer before you sign.
I was declined. What happens next?
You receive a written adverse action notice within 30 days listing the specific reasons and the credit score we used. Bring it to any branch and a lender will tell you what to fix and roughly how long it takes. A meaningful share of members are approved on a second application within six months.
Membership and the cooperative
Who is eligible to join?
Anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in our service area, plus the family and household members of anyone already in. Once you are a member you stay one for life, even if you move away. Start at become a member.
What does it cost?
A $5 deposit into a share savings account. That five dollars is your ownership stake, it remains your money, and it comes back if you ever close out. There is no application fee and no annual membership charge.
What does member-owned change day to day?
Earnings return to members as better deposit rates, lower loan rates, and fewer fees rather than going to outside shareholders. Governance is one member, one vote for the volunteer board, regardless of how much you keep on deposit. See our story.
How long does opening an account take?
About ten minutes online with a government ID, your Social Security number, and a funding source. In a branch it runs a little longer because we issue your card and set up digital banking while you sit there. You can also book an appointment.
Can I bank when I am nowhere near a Summit branch?
Yes. Beyond our 42 branches, 5,600 shared branches across the country accept deposits, withdrawals, and loan payments on your Summit account. Just give the teller your member number and photo ID.
My question is not here.
Call 800.555.7846 between 7am and 7pm Monday through Saturday, or send a secure message from inside online banking. For anything involving a lost card or suspected fraud, use the 24-hour line rather than waiting for business hours.
